Rutger Hoedemaekers first started creating music in his teens, at first composing for computer games and later producing ambient and techno in the emerging electronic scene. He went on to study composition at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, but left after one year because the classical world wasn’t for him, yet.
He started working with electronic acts and rock bands, gaining experience in writing and producing. In 2007, Hoedemaekers spent time in New York, Connecticut and San Diego, co-producing an album for indie-rock band Voicst, along with Peter Katis (The National, Interpol, Jónsi). That same year, he moved to Berlin and started plans to found a studio there. Together with two friends, Hoedemaekers converted a 3500-square-feet factory floor in Kreuzberg into a modular studio with 8 rooms. Over the next few years, the studio became a creative hub for composers and musicians, with tenants including Jóhann Jóhannsson, Dustin O’Halloran and Hildur Gudnadottir.
Since then, Hoedemaekers has not only spent time on his solo band project, Bart Constant, but also started working as a composer for film and TV. In 2015, he was asked by Jóhann Jóhannsson to co-compose the score for acclaimed Icelandic crime series Trapped (BBC4, France 2, ZDF) with him and Hildur Gudnadottir. Hoedemaekers went on to work with Jóhannsson on Darren Aronofsky’s mother! and composed additional music for James Marsh’s The Mercy (2018).
In 2018, Hoedemaekers scored his first feature as a solo composer, for German production The Last Berliner, which won Best Feature at the Manchester Film Festival. He is currently in the process of scoring Hulu / Arte France production Fertile Crescent, which is due out in 2020.
